Keeping with the tone and style of Cape Glory and for game balance reasons, no cell phones have text capability nor can they access the internet, email, take pictures, call space, twit, tweet or stream. Period. They are just phones. JUST. PHONES.
Please keep in mind that the phones are a stylistic throwback, not a technological one. It does not mean all modern electronics in Cape Glory are scaled back to 1999.
Why are cellphones like this? It's just how cellphones are, in the movies, books and shows that we love and draw inspiration from for this setting. See the phones in the Matrix for a nice idea of how they will look and work.
With that in mind, the following phone features are banned:
Text Messaging
Text messaging can become rather ridiculous in games, so the gods of tone and setting have purged the capability from Cape Glory as an unwanted intrusion of modern life. NO texting is allowed in the game and in fact, does not exist.
Camera/Audio-recording Phones
Phones are not portable full audio-visual suites, as some people would like. These phones do not exist within Cape Glory and its environs. Why? Because the same gods (read: your game creators) want it that way and because everyone texting everyone all the time instead of TALKING and INTERACTING is annoying.
Cellphones are used to make phone calls, nothing more, nothing less.
Using Phones in Combat
To dial a number and get it ringing takes a total of 3 combat rounds. Grab your phone, find a number in it (not a quick dial), and get at least two rings. Took you about 10-15 seconds, didn't it? That translates to roughly 3 combat rounds.
A single combat round allows one or two short sentences to be said, and another two to be received. You cannot recite the Iliad into the phone in a single combat round.
Logging Phone Calls
- No XP is granted for RP time spent OOC in a phone call. If that is all your nightly RP is, that is not counted toward XP.
- Logging in GP channels is not required for phone calls. However, any important IC information passed in a phone call must be immediately reported to the STs in #stchambers. Including plot information.
- Logging is highly encouraged for anyone making important IC phone calls. Without a complete log of a phone call, it is subject to being retconned.
- Phone play is discouraged as your primary form of roleplay or information passing.
- If you wish to call someone who is offline, leave them a message on this board via the private message feature.
- You cannot 'bug' a conversation by reaching into your pocket and turning a cellphone on. Or hiding one nearby, or anything of that nature. Cellphone mics simply not good enough to do this.
