Caitiff are clanless vampires, often looked down on, despised or simply ignored by Kindred society, considered bastards or orphans. That said, some Caitiff have risen to great ranks among the Anarchs, and one has become Prince of Cairo.

Vampires may become Caitiff through having no idea who their sire is, or of being from such a weak generation that they fail to exhibit identifying clan traits. Though there were few Caitiff in history, the post-WWII period has seen a sharp rise in their number. There are those who whisper of the "Time of Thin Blood" that heralds Gehenna, the vampires' legend of their own Apocalypse.
